Riding description

NDP MLA Rob Fleming is seeking re-election in a riding he’s already won decisively twice before.

Liberal candidate Christina Bates, who runs a local active wear clothing shop, is making her first foray into politics in an attempt to unseat him.

The riding includes the Gorge waterway to Admirals Road, as well as the neighbourhoods of Hillside, Quadra Village, Cedar Hill and Swan Lake.

• Previous elected experience: Two terms as MLA, two terms as city councillor, CRD director
• Community involvement: Past board member of the Veins of Life Watershed Society and Environmental Defence sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½; Have been an accredited observer in a Central American election (El Salvador).
• Top three issues: Tackling climate change and promoting environmental sustainability; Expansion of Public transit service and improving transportation networks in the capital region; Standing up for vulnerable citizens - seniors and low-income earners.

• Community involvement: I am involved in invasive plant species removal with Saanich Pulling Together, a partnership presenter for the British Columbia Schizophrenic Society Victoria Chapter, ongoing donating to various charity organizations, a member of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Association of Family Enterprises.
• Top three issues: Creating Jobs and Supporting Local Business, Mental Health and Disabilities, and Environmental Stewardship.

• Age: 23
• Occupation: Financial Services Professional
• Previous elected experience: I am the youngest candidate in this election. I waited until this election to commit to any one party because my political views have been steadily evolving. I have no elected experience but I have been very involved in politics for several years. I was somewhat involved in student politics while I attended McGill University.
• Community involvement: I was a junior leader in my local 4-H club growing up and I have always been very involved in theatre. I was involved in 8 ensemble productions at McGill, including two lead roles on McGill Mainstage. I write theatre reviews in Victoria and I am the regional PRIDE and diversity representative in my company.
• Top three issues: Ending homelessness through affordable housing, building a sustainable economy in BC, and electoral reform including proportional representation.
