After a long evaluation and interview process, the Nanaimo Arts Council has selected 12 local arts students to receive a 2006 Achievement Award.

Classical singer Betty Allison was awarded the top prize towards her arts education this year. Allison is an excellent opera singer, who has recently received placement in the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Program. She will be using her Arts Council bursary to help with the training she needs to prepare for that placement.

Awards also went to Allison Rhodes, Marty Hilchey, Spenser Halfyard, Sarah Lane, Spencer Dee, Adam Cormier, Brittany Hannah, Christina Windle, Jee Lam, Sarah Parenteau and Ethan Meservia.

The Nanaimo Arts Council awarded $3600 to these students, as part of its annual Nanaimo Arts Council Achievement Award Program, which is designed to help young, emerging and dedicated artists with tuition and equipment fees. Selections were made on the basis of talent, potential, achievements, dedication and financial need.

The Nanaimo Arts Council is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to the support, promotion and development of all the arts in Nanaimo and area.
