Residents near Rutledge Park woke up to the sound of explosions Wednesday night after a car was engulfed in flames.

Teale Phelps Bondaroff lives in an apartment overlooking the park and said around 11:35 p.m., he heard a large explosion. He went to his patio and could see a 鈥渉uge fireball鈥 on the far side of the park. Moment later, there was a second explosion. He and several others called 911 and Saanich Fire was at the scene within two minutes, he said.

鈥淭heir response time was incredible,鈥 he said.

Saanich Fire platoon captain Mitch Williams said the car was parked in the 900-block of Inverness Road. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes and the car was towed from the scene.

The fire was in the engine compartment of the vehicle, so fire inspectors have not been able to determine a cause, Williams said.
