Get ready to write, because Canadian Authors-Victoria is bringing back its 鈥渇lash writing鈥 contest, but with a new twist.

The authors鈥 association challenges writers in Victoria to come up with a complete story in just 250 words. This year, the competition is for non-fiction, rather than fiction. This year鈥檚 judge is David Leach, chairman of the University of Victoria writing department and an award-winning creative-nonfiction writer.

In those 250 words, writers can tackle 鈥減ersonal essays, travel writing, memoir, literary journalism,鈥 or just about any other true story, 鈥渙ften told with a personal voice and dramatic techniques.鈥

The entries have to be original and cannot be published or under consideration elsewhere. The contest is open to residents of Vancouver Island and 鈥渘earby Canadian islands.鈥

Entries must be submitted online by emailing attachments to [email protected]. You can submit more than one entry.

Entry fees of $10 for Canadian Authors Association members and $15 for non-members must accompany each entry. Entrants can pay online by PayPal or by mailing a cheque to the association.

The deadline is midnight on Monday, July 17. For full contest information, visit the association鈥檚 website at canadianauthors.org/vancouver/victoria.

The winning writer will receive $100, with $75 going to second place and $50 to third place. The winning entries will be published on the association鈥檚 website.
