The artwork of Randy Huber, an artist with a remarkable life, will be on display at the new Nanaimo Arts Council Gallery in Rutherford Mall for the month of May.

Huber started out in the Canadian army at the age of 17, where he served in the Canadian Airborne Regiment. After a summer tour in Cyprus, he was accepted as a Search and Rescue technician. In 1982, he took the Para-rescue course and enjoyed postings in Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Ontario performing air and sea rescues by parachute from the Buffalo aircraft or hoist from the Labrador helicopter.

In his spare time, Huber competed in provincial and regional bodybuilding competitions, where he won several awards and titles. He also kept busy competing in triathlons and keeping active as a climber, including a successful ascent of Mt. Logan, sa国际传媒's highest peak.

In 1995, Huber was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. His battle with the disease ended his military career in 1997, but allowed him the time to attend the Victoria College of Art and North Island College, where he earned a diploma in fine art and design and received the Peter Robinson Award of Excellence for his graduating class.

Huber paints beautiful depictions of Nanaimo landmarks and buildings, including many of downtown Nanaimo's oldest heritage buildings. He likes nostalgic themes of local buildings and scenery, which is the focus of his current show. All the pieces in his current show are depictions of Vancouver Island and have been painted in the last three years. Huber now lives and paints in beautiful south Nanaimo.

The gallery is now located near Sears, next to the Military Museum.
