Man struck and killed in Port Alberni crosswalk

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a truck while in a marked crosswalk in Port Alberni Tuesday afternoon.

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a truck while in a marked crosswalk in Port Alberni Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses told Port Alberni RCMP that they saw a GMC pickup truck making a left-hand turn at the intersection of Johnston Road and Tebo Avenue hit the 80-year-old man just after noon.

Witnesses said that the pedestrian was crossing Johnston Road in the crosswalk when he was struck.

The pedestrian, a resident of Port Alberni, suffered serious injuries. He was transported to hospital by ambulance, but later succumbed to his 颅injuries.

鈥淭he driver and sole occupant of the pickup remained on scene and was cooperative with police,鈥 said Cpl. Chris Manseau, sa国际传媒 RCMP media relations officer.

鈥淭he cause of the collision is still under investigation, and no charges have been laid. Investigators are reaching out to motorists and pedestrians who witnessed or may have video leading up to the crash to contact the Port Alberni RCMP.鈥

Port Alberni RCMP are being assisted by a traffic analyst from the Integrated Collision Analyst and 颅Reconstruction Service.
