Dozens of four-wheeled treasures will be on display this Sunday at the annual Vancouver Island Motor Gathering in North Cowichan.

The event, presented by the GAIN Dealer Group, is open to the public. Admission is by donation, and all funds raised go to charity — namely, the David Foster Foundation and the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation.

The gathering will feature a wide variety of classic, unique, modern and custom cars and motorcycles. It is taking place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Vancouver Island Motorsport Circuit, 4063 Cowichan Valley Highway.

The event will feature a food court, raffles and awards for the fan favourite, as well as the vehicles judged to be the best in the show.

GAIN sponsored the European Car Picnic for almost 20Ìýyears, and then created the Motor Gathering to encourage all makes, models and genres to be displayed at one time.

The first event, in 2013, raised more than $52,000 for the Children's Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. In 2014, there were $75,000 in cash donations and more than $200,000 in in-kind sponsorships.

In 2015, the event raised more than $118,000 in cash donations and more than $200,000 in in-kind donations.

In 2016, the event reached a new high, with $100,000 given to the David Foster Foundation, and more than $53,000 to the Cowichan District Hospital Foundation. Another $200,000 was given in in-kind donations.

Award winners of each category will receive $500, while the best in show will receive $1,000, all sponsored and funded by the GAIN Dealer Group.

A trio of judges will rate the vehicles in several categories, including best American, best British, best German, best Italian, best Japanese, best classic, best motorcycle, best import, best pre-war, best post-war, best sports car, best truck, best muscle car, best street rod, best original, best in show, and best car-club display.

An award will also be given for the fan favourite.

The judges are:

• Rudi Koniczek, the world-renowned restorer of Mercedes-Benz gullwings, who has more than 50 years of experience in the automotive industry. He has judged many other car shows.

• Mike Grams, who runs Coachwerks, the Victoria-based classic car restoration business.

• Chris Yarrow, who has had a lifelong passion for cars, especially American classics and British sports cars.

Winning vehicles must drive and run well, but might have some incorrect parts. They are ready for a long tour without excuses, and the casual passerby will not find any visual flaws.

An award will not be given within a specific category if no vehicle meets the minimum standards.

The 2.3-kilometre motorsport track is a private membership club and motorsports facility in front of Mount Prevost, west of Duncan.
