New flag for a new citizen

I returned to sa国际传媒, arriving in Halifax from England on Feb. 15, 1960. In those days, one had to wait five years before becoming a Canadian.

On Feb. 15, 1965, I skipped my classes at the University of British Columbia and went downtown to the office of the High Commissioner. I didn鈥檛 make an appointment, just of walked in and said, 鈥淚 want to become a citizen of sa国际传媒.鈥

I must have had my landed immigrant鈥檚 papers and passport, but I don鈥檛 remember filling in forms 鈥 those weren鈥檛 the important things. What I remember is being in the High Commissioner鈥檚 office and taking the Oath of Allegiance to sa国际传媒, my country, on that day.

And on that day the Maple Leaf flag became sa国际传媒鈥檚 flag. It is, in more ways than one, my flag.
