One person dead in highway crash; police search for driver who fled scene

Police are searching for the driver of a truck involved in a fatal collision Saturday morning near Ladysmith.

sa国际传媒 RCMP say the man is believed to have fled the scene of the crash and stolen another vehicle.

The man police are looking for is believed to be the driver of a southbound truck that crossed the centre median and collided with a northbound SUV on the Trans-sa国际传媒 Highway near Oyster-Stolo Road.

The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said investigators are extremely concerned about the F-150 driver鈥檚 well-being after the high-speed collision. There is evidence that the driver is injured.

The crash happened just before 8:30 a.m. and closed parts of the Island Highway for hours. In the late afternoon, traffic flow was limited to a single lane in each direction, and motorists were asked to avoid the area.

The cause of the collision is unknown.

A traffic reconstructionist has been called to assist in the investigation, and is working to determine the cause.

The sa国际传媒 Coroners Service is conducting a concurrent investigation and will assist police in determining the deceased person鈥檚 identity.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call the South Island Traffic Services at 250-416-0352.
