James Hill has been compared to Jimi Hendrix, and for good reason. Hill is not simply a ukulele virtuoso with a fondness for fretboard fireworks, he鈥檚 a radical reinventor who plays fast and loose with tradition 鈥 resulting in a singular style that favours fun above everything else.
Despite recording popular ukulele versions of Hendrix鈥檚 Voodoo Chile and Michael Jackson鈥檚 Billie Jean, the upstart Juno Award nominee is not turning his back on tradition. His performance today at the Dave Dunnet Community Theatre in Oak Bay High School pairs him with the Civic Orchestra of Victoria for a family-friendly afternoon of classical-leaning music.
Hill will perform (along with special guests Island Ukuleles and conductor Brian Wismath) a suite for ukulele and orchestra, along with a Vivaldi concerto for guitar that has been transcribed for ukulele.
Fans can also get in on the action. Ticketholders are encouraged to bring a ukulele of their own and play along with Hill and Co. during a 鈥渟trum-along鈥 at the end of the concert. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paid adult.
Showtime is 2 p.m., with doors scheduled to open at 1:30. Advance tickets are sold out, but seats might be available prior to the start of the concert and will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis. Tickets sold at the door will be cash only, according to organizers.
