Teens have trouble with condoms

Survey

A worrying number of young people who use condoms are doing so incorrectly, according to research published in Sexually Transmitted Infections.

A survey of 1,400 English teens found half had had penetrative vaginal sex. Almost two-thirds had used a condom on the most recent occasion. However, 6% of those had used a condom after penetration and 6% had continued to have penetrative sex after removing the condom. Those who used other forms of contraception were more than three times as likely to use condoms incorrectly.

The research also showed that those who had a close relationship with their mothers were more likely to use condoms correctly.
