Uno Fest kicks off 10-day salute to one-person shows

Victoria鈥檚 salute to one-person stage performances begins in earnest today at Metro Studio, Intrepid Theatre Club and other venues across the city.

Now in its 20th year, Intrepid Theatre鈥檚 Uno Fest is hosting 15 one-person shows over the next 10 days from Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, San Francisco and New聽York. Over two decades, the festival of聽solo performance has hosted more than 330 shows, including performances by such notables as American monologist Mike Daisy, musician Hawksley Workman and T.J.聽Dawe, who returns this year with his聽show Burn Job.

The Uno Festival is varied. The shows include After the Beep, Pamela Bethel鈥檚 ode to real-life phone messages from her teen years; 4 1/2 (ig)noble truths, Thomas McKechnie鈥檚 punk performance-lecture on聽clinical depression; Quiver, Anna Chatterton鈥檚 tale of a single mother and a聽rebellious teen daughter colliding when a聽love interest comes between them; and聽Broken Tailbone, in which Carmen Aguirre gives a salsa lesson while recalling her experiences in sa国际传媒鈥檚 dance halls).

Uno Fest is curated by Heather Lindsay, Intrepid Theatre鈥檚 executive director. She聽vetted 60 videotaped submissions and聽travelled to see other contenders.

The festival continues today to May 27. Tickets are $18, $20 and $25 and passes $50聽and $85 (at intrepidtheatre.com or Ticket聽Rocket at 101-804 Broughton St.).
