Vandoos event went splendidly

In the summer of 1967, I was a young infantry officer in the Royal 22nd Regiment, posted to the regimental depot La Citadelle in Quebec City.

On sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½â€™s Centennial birthday, July 1, 1967, I was designated to lead the ceremonial Changing of the Guard.

The sun was shining on the parade square as we entered to Bobby Gimby’s wonderful Ca-na-da, arranged as a march by our band’s director, and led of course by our mascot goat Batisse.

The ceremony went off without a hitch, and ended with the guard marching off the square to the Vandoos’ regimental march Vive la Canadienne and the applause of more than 2,500 spectators.

It’s a memory that my wife and I have cherished for 50 years. — Sandy Cottono
