A driver lost control of his car on the wet surface of the Patricia Bay Highway late Sunday morning, hit a utility pole and went down an embankment, Saanich police said.

The male driver and female passenger were taken to hospital by ambulance. Their injuries were found to be minor and not life-threatening, police said in a statement.

Investigators suspect that heavy rain and wet roads played a factor, along with speed, police said.

The collision occurred in the 5100 block of Highway 17 near Sayward Road.

Police said as the driver lost control, the car veered to the right.

Southbound lanes were closed for about 25 minutes

Police are urging drivers to to adjust their speed relative to the road and weather conditions.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has video footage is asked to speak to police. The vehicle involved was a mid-2000s white Chrysler 300 four-door sedan.
