KELOWNA — A car crashed into Okanagan Lake near Peachland Tuesday night and all its occupants were rescued.

A West Kelowna woman was driving home from Penticton at about 10:40 p.m. when she came upon a red sedan that had recently crashed into the lake, just north of the Dragon Lotus restaurant off Highway 97.

“The gentleman had made it up the bank … he was on the road frantically trying to flag somebody down,” said the woman, who asked to remain anonymous.

She and another driver stopped to assist, and the other driver crawled down the bank while she called 911.

The man who had been driving the crashed car took a three-year-old child and a three-month-old infant from the backseat of the car and placed them in the West Kelowna woman’s car to help warm them up, before emergency crews arrived.

“The [emergency crew] response was great, they were there within 10 minutes,” she said.

A woman involved in the crash appeared to injure her back and she was taken into an ambulance on a backboard.

The man involved in the crash was also taken to hospital to be checked.

The children were not injured and family friends arrived and took them home.

The woman who had stopped to assist said it was raining at the time and there was lots of standing water on the highway in that area.

“Literally, there was a wave that covered my car [at one point],” she said.
