Two taken to hospital after section of rooftop parking lot collapses in Vancouver

Fire department says heavy machinery on parkade led to collapse.

VANCOUVER — Two people were taken to hospital on Thursday afternoon following the partial collapse of a rooftop parking lot at a commercial building on Lougheed Highway.

Firefighters, paramedics and police responded to 3434 Lougheed Highway at around 3:45 p.m. after a piece of heavy equipment led to the partial collapse. A hole that is roughly 12 metres by 12 metres is visible.

The highway is closed to traffic east of Rupert Street.

Assistant Fire Chief Dan Moberg of Vancouver Fire Rescue Services told media the collapse occurred while a skid-steer loader was working on the roof. Heavy equipment fell into the spaces below in the two-storey building, which is built into the side of a steep hill. Cars can enter the rooftop parking area directly from Lougheed.

sa国际传媒 Emergency Health Services confirmed that two people had been transported to hospital.

WorkSafe sa国际传媒 spokesperson Craig Fitzsimmons said they were notified on Thursday afternoon about “this serious incident and sent a team of prevention officers to the site.”
