Ryan Malane, the late vice-president of Black Ball Ferry, was posthumously inducted into the Washington state Tourism Hall of Leadership last week.

Malane, who was 48 when he died in Seattle in June after a short illness, was inducted by Marsha Massey, executive director of the Olympic Peninsula Visitor Bureau.

His wife, Cynthia, accepted the induction of Malane, a co-owner and vice-president of marketing for Black Ball Ferry Line in Port Angeles, at last week’s event.

The State of Washington Tourism launched the Tourism Hall of Leadership this year, and inducted three members — Malane, Sandy Ward, chief executive of Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism, and Dr. Terry Umbreit, who led the Washington State University School of Hospitality Business Management for 25 years.

Malane’s death came as a shock to the tourism industries of both Victoria and Washington state, where he was seen as an influential tourism leader.
