Mount Washington got its first dusting of snow and 鈥 fingers crossed 鈥 hopes to open Dec. 4.
The flakes were flying Sunday atop the mountain near Courtenay, prompting Mount Washington to close its popular bike park and end the summer season.
General manager Dean Prentice said the plan is to open the 1,700-acre resort for skiing and snowboarding on Dec. 4.
鈥淎s always with our coastal climate, this depends on the weather, but our snow-making system is ready to blow, and we hope for cold temperatures as well as Mother Nature鈥檚 support for an on-time opening,鈥 Prentice said in an email to Mount Washington subscribers.
Prentice also outlined pandemic protocols at the resort.
Face coverings will be required to access the mountain, including in lift lines and while loading, unloading and riding on chairlifts, he said. Face coverings will be required in every part of the resort, including in the base area, inside buildings, and during lessons.
Guests who don鈥檛 comply with the guidelines will be asked to leave.
Equipment rental will be available only through advanced online reservations.
The number of skiers at the resort might have to be restricted on busy days, but season鈥檚 pass holders will have priority, Prentice said.
