Nanaimo-based literacy nonprofit names new executive director

Gerald Halabura has been appointed as the executive director of Literacy Central Vancouver Island, a major literacy organization in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith area.

Literacy Central Vancouver Island president George Anderson said that Halabura’s appointment marks an important point in the organization. “Literacy is the cornerstone of [e]qual opportunity in society, and with Mr. Halabura at the helm, we are poised to amplify our impact.”

Halabura said in a statement that he was “honoured and humbled” by the appointment.

Halabura held leadership roles at the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society and the Department of Academic Upgrading and ESL at Columbia College in Calgary, Alta. prior to his appointment.

In addition to providing literacy and adult educational support services in the mid-Island area, Literacy Central Vancouver Island operates the Well Read Books bookstore in Nanaimo, which funds literacy programs for Nanaimo, Ladysmith and Gabriola Island.

Anti-crime group’s membership doubles

A consortium of sa国际传媒 retailers, trade organizations and community associations calling for a unified effort to tackle theft, violence and vandalism in the province named Save Our Streets has reported that it has nearly doubled in membership.

The group launched in late October with about 30 members but has since grown to nearly 60 in total, the group said in a statement in January.

The coalition has representation in Victoria, Nanaimo, ­Duncan and Campbell River.

The newest members of Save Our Streets include the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Campbell River Business Improvement Association, and the Magnolia Hotel and Spa in Victoria.

WestShore Chamber elects new secretary

Chris Burdge, owner of bWEST Interactive, a Langford-based online marketing firm has been elected as secretary of the WestShore Chamber of Commerce, taking over the director position from Lori Frank of Lori Frank Mediation & Consultancy.

Burdge has previously served as a director in 2021.

Ingrid Vaughan, owner-operator of My Smart HR and Leadership, and Kelly Darwin, chief executive of Spark Agency and Westshore Web Hosting are retaining their positions as chamber president and vice-president respectively.

Apart from Frank, all the directors from last year are continuing their terms on the board.
