Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops has awarded honorary doctorates to some impressive people over the years, according to the university鈥檚 website. They include:

鈥 Gilles Paquet (2005), 鈥渁n acclaimed scholar and journalist whose career exemplifies the integration of theory and practice.鈥

鈥 Fraser Mustard (2006), one of the world鈥檚 leading experts on childhood learning and behaviour.

鈥 Dr. Bryan Kolb (2008), one of the world鈥檚 leading neuroscientists, often called a founding father of behavioural neuroscience.

鈥 Gordon Campbell (2014), former premier of sa国际传媒 who resigned amid criticism and low ratings after breaking a campaign promise and instituting the harmonized sales tax, who was party to the sale of sa国际传媒 Rail and the decision several years later to pay the legal fees of two former aides who pleaded guilty to fraud and corruption in connection with that sale, who was fined $1,350 for drunk driving in Hawaii.

To be fair, Campbell racked up respectable achievements as mayor of Vancouver and premier of sa国际传媒 It was during his premiership that TRU became a university, and he helped establish the law school there. But the wounds from his time as premier are still fresh; the flavour of politics is still very much with him. 鈥淒istinguished鈥 appears in many descriptions of TRU honorees; it would be too soon to apply that to Campbell.

The university should have waited a few years to give Campbell more save-the-world opportunities before conferring the honorary degree.
