The waterfront in its various manifestations is one of Greater Victoria鈥檚 best attractions, but it鈥檚 good to be open to ways to polish this gem.
Anchoring a barge at Ogden Point to be used as a site for Sunday markets and food trucks could be a good addition to the sites and activities already available in that area.
The 10,000-square-foot barge was installed by Salish Sea Industrial Services and is the result of a partnership involving Seaspan, Ralmax Group, Pacific Pilotage, Western Stevedoring and the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority. It鈥檚 a pilot project that will run for two years, with its eight-Sunday season starting July 5. GVHA staff will look for other possibilities for the barge.
It鈥檚 a venture worth watching, one that comes with good potential at a relatively low price.
It鈥檚 a worthy complement to the Ogden Point breakwater, an already-popular site that saw a boost in use three years ago when handrails were installed.
That project attracted some criticism at first, with some people saying the safety rails would take away the open-ocean experience they relished.
But the rails were welcomed by people with disabilities, many senior citizens and families with young children who felt more confident about walking the 800-metre structure.
The possibilities for enjoying the region鈥檚 attractions are almost endless, but it never hurts to add a few more.
