Editorial: Funny haircut not so funny

It鈥檚 a great relief to learn that rumour about Kim Jong Un鈥檚 hairdo is likely false.
It鈥檚 a great relief to learn that rumour about Kim Jong Un鈥檚 hairdo is likely false. According to a report sweeping through the digital universe, North Korea was about to decree that every male should adopt the distinctive haircut favoured by their Dear Leader. Observers who have visited that country say there鈥檚 no truth to the rumour.

Whew! The idea of millions of men sporting that incomprehensibly bad hair style is almost frightening. (You鈥檇 think a dictator could afford a better barber.)

Yes, there鈥檚 plenty of fodder for jokes about a man who constantly says stupid things and cuts such a ridiculous figure. But the jokes wear thin when you realize the buffoon and his cohorts are cold-blooded killers, heartless oppressors and dangerous players on the world stage. They run a country where people are arrested for trivial reasons or no reason at all, and confined to labour camps, a virtual death sentence.

People eat twigs, insects and grass to survive, and children starve on the streets, yet untold resources are wasted on lavish displays that praise a regime that gets worse with each succeeding generation.

Kim presides over a country that claims to be a people鈥檚 paradise with high standards of virtue, yet for most North Koreans, it is a living hell riddled with corruption, cruelty and deceit.

When you stop to consider the insane evil that lies behind that toothy smile, the haircut doesn鈥檛 seem so funny any more.
