Editorial: Langford earns a place on rugby map

Rugby has some legendary venues: Cardiff, Twickenham, Sydney … and Langford. The outcome was not what the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Sevens hoped for in the World Rugby Women’s Seven Series at Westhills Stadium last weekend — the host team finished in sixth place, but the event was still a triumph.

This was the first World Sevens Series event to be hosted in sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ and the fans packed the stands — more than 6,500 over two days. Women’s Seven Series matches elsewhere have generally played to nearly empty stadiums.

It’s a feather in the cap for Rugby sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½, which is headquartered in Langford, but it’s also a credit to local support — for the team, for the tournament and for the sport. World Rugby’s top people went away impressed with how the series was conducted and how the community got behind it.

And Rugby sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½â€™s spirit and expertise has benefited local rugby. It was appropriate that the final two matches for the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ high school girls’ sevens championships were sandwiched between matches in the international event.

It might be premature to bill Langford as a legendary world rugby venue, but it has certainly been placed on the world rugby map.
