Editorial: Real men need not apply

A balanced, confident, intelligent person has no need to be aggressive or ridicule others to compensate for fears, insecurities and shortcomings.
A balanced, confident, intelligent person has no need to be aggressive or ridicule others to compensate for fears, insecurities and shortcomings.

And then there鈥檚 the pro-men movement, some adherents of which talked of gathering Saturday evening in Victoria to assert their 鈥渉eterosexual masculinity.鈥

We would like to think the movement would find few followers in Victoria, one of 165 locations in 43 countries chosen for International Meetup Day.

Before it was cancelled on Wednesday, the event was being remotely organized by Daryush Valizadeh, a self-published author who founded the website Return of Kings. The website is a sewer of misogyny, racism, dark rantings and just plain ugliness.

Valizadeh鈥檚 rants call for the return of women to subservient roles, far away from seats of power and influence. He advocates the 鈥渟uperiority of patriarchy,鈥 and names several women in prominent positions as poor role models for girls.

He rails against female promiscuity, yet most of his books are primers on how to pick up women for sex. He sneeringly claims most rape victims are liars.

Democracy is a failure, he writes, because it 鈥渉as never been proven to produce good ideas or results, but is being used because it is a tool to remove power and influence from men.鈥

There鈥檚 more, but don鈥檛 bother checking. Your time would be far better spent trimming your toenails.

It鈥檚 hard to see how this angry, warped perspective could attract any but the most desperate, most pathetic of men. But to those men, we can only say this:

Get a life.
