'Emilia P茅rez' and 'Wicked' advance in Oscars shortlists

The Selena Gomez ballad 鈥淢i Camino,鈥 the Will Ferrell and Harper Steele road trip documentary 鈥淲ill & Harper鈥 and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross鈥檚 pulsating 鈥淐丑补濒濒别苍驳别谤蝉鈥 score are one step closer to an Oscar nomination.

The Selena Gomez ballad 鈥淢i Camino,鈥 the Will Ferrell and Harper Steele road trip documentary and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross鈥檚 pulsating score are one step closer to an Oscar nomination. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled shortlists in 10 categories Tuesday, including for documentary, international feature, best song and score.

Two musicals, and 鈥淲icked,鈥 were well represented in the categories. Netflix鈥檚 audacious transgender drug-lord drama 鈥淓milia P茅rez鈥 was most named, advancing in international feature, original score, two original songs including 鈥淢i Camino鈥 and 鈥淓l Mal鈥 (performed by Zoe Salda帽a), sound and hair and makeup.

鈥淲icked鈥 also moved forward in several categories, like hair and makeup, original score, sound and visual effects. The adaptation of the Broadway musical did not include original songs and therefore wasn鈥檛 eligible in that category.

The song semifinalists include several notable artists, like Lainey Wilson for her 鈥淭wisters鈥 song 鈥淥ut of Oklahoma,鈥 Elton John and Brandi Carlile for 鈥淣ever Too Late鈥 and Robbie Williams for 鈥淔orbidden Road鈥 Diane Warren may also be heading for a 16th nomination for her song from 鈥淭he Six Triple Eight.鈥 Nicholas Britell鈥檚 鈥淲inter Coat,鈥 performed by Saoirse Ronan in 鈥淏litz,鈥 was also included, as was Lin-Manuel Miranda鈥檚 鈥淭ell Me It鈥檚 You鈥 from performed by Aaron Pierre and Tiffany Boone.

Among the 15 documentaries eligible for nominations are 鈥淓苍辞,鈥 鈥淒ahomey,鈥 鈥淯nion,鈥 鈥淧orcelain War鈥 and

There are also 15 international features advancing, including 鈥淚鈥檓 Still Here鈥 (Brazil), 鈥淯niversal Language鈥 (sa国际传媒), (Germany), 鈥淜neecap鈥 (Ireland), 鈥淰ermiglio鈥 (Italy), (Latvia) and 鈥淒ahomey鈥 (Senegal).

As most of the shortlists are in below-the-line categories celebrating crafts, there are also films that aren鈥檛 necessarily the most obvious of Oscar contenders. was singled out for both sound and visual effects, as was 鈥淎lien: Romulus鈥 which also got a nod for score.

鈥淒une: Part Two,鈥 included in visual effects, sound and makeup and hair, was notably not among the 20 score finalists. Hans Zimmer鈥檚 work was not eligible because it contained too much preexisting music from the first 鈥淒une.鈥 He did make the cut for 鈥淏litz,鈥 however, as did Danny Elfman for 鈥淏eetlejuice Beetlejuice,鈥 for 鈥淭he Wild Robot,鈥 Bryce Dessner for 鈥淪ing Sing鈥 and Daniel Blumberg for 鈥淭he Brutalist.鈥

For the most part, shortlists are determined by members in their respective categories, though the specifics vary from branch to branch: Some have committees, some have minimum viewing requirements.

These lists will narrow to five when final nominations are announced on Jan. 17. The 97th Oscars, hosted by , will be held on Sunday, March 2, broadcasting on ABC and streaming live on Hulu.
