Mexican actor Ana Ofelia Murgu铆a, who voiced Mama Coco in 'Coco,' dies at 90

Mexico鈥檚 National Fine Arts Institute announced Murgu铆a鈥檚 death Sunday without providing a cause of death.

鈥淪he leaves an enormous void on our country鈥檚 sets,鈥 Culture Secretary Alejandra Frausto Guerrero said in a statement.

鈥淐oco,鈥 which was released in 2017, brought Murgu铆a to an international audience late in life.

But the actor had a long acting career in Mexican film and television, and on the stage. She appeared in some 70 plays and 90 movies, including 鈥楲ife Sentence鈥 (1979) and 鈥橳he Queen of the Night鈥 (1994).

In the animated 鈥溾楥oco,鈥 she voiced the soft-spoken great-grandmother of a boy discovering his family鈥檚 musical history.

In April, the National Autonomous University of Mexico awarded Murgu铆a its Ingmar Bergman Medal for leaving 鈥渁n indelible mark鈥 on Mexican film and theater.

In her acceptance speech, Murgu铆a displayed her typical humility, asking 鈥淲hy me?鈥 She said she was exhausted by all of the recognition and plaudits.

鈥淭his career has been my life,鈥 Murgu铆a said. 鈥淚t has been the passion of my life. I鈥檝e loved it.鈥
