The 鈥淏arbie鈥� and AP and Frontline鈥檚 just got one step closer to an Oscar nomination. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday shortlists in 10 categories, including best original song, documentary feature, international feature, original score, and crafts like hair and makeup, visual effects and sound.
was shortlisted in both the documentary and international feature categories, representing Ukraine in the latter.
As expected, Greta Gerwig's Christopher Nolan's and Martin Scorsese's were prominently represented among the finalists in many categories, including score and sound, as was Jonathan Glazer's Yorgos Lanthimos' also advanced in makeup, visual effects and score and in visual effects, song and score.
Among the 15 international features advancing are 鈥淭he Zone of Interest鈥� (United Kingdom), Tr岷 Anh H霉ng鈥檚 鈥淭he Taste of Things鈥� (France), Lila Avil茅s鈥� 鈥淭贸tem鈥� (Mexico) and Aki Kaurism盲ki鈥檚 鈥淔allen Leaves鈥� (Finland). Justine Triet's acclaimed was not selected to represent France and thus was not eligible in the category.
Original song contenders competing against 鈥淚鈥檓 Just Ken鈥� include two other Dua Lipa鈥檚 鈥淒ance the Night鈥� and Billie Eilish鈥檚 鈥淲hat Was I Made For?鈥� Only two songs from a single movie can advance to the nomination stage, however. Both 鈥淔lora and Son鈥� and had two songs advance.
Other contenders include Sharon Van Etten for 鈥淨uiet Eyes鈥� from 鈥淧ast Lives,鈥� Olivia Rodrigo for 鈥淐an't Catch Me Now,鈥� from 鈥淭he Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,鈥� Jon Batiste for 鈥淚t Never Went Away鈥� from 鈥淎merican Symphony,鈥� Lenny Kravitz for his 鈥淩ustin鈥� song 鈥淩oad to Freedom鈥� and Jarvis Cocker's 鈥淒ear Alien (Who Art In Heaven)鈥� from 鈥淎steroid City.鈥�
Diane Warren will also get another shot at a nomination for 鈥淭he Fire Inside鈥� from 鈥淔lamin' Hot.鈥� But several expected finalists were left off, including Justin Timberlake for 鈥淭rolls Band Together" and Jack Black for his 鈥淪uper Mario Bros. Movie鈥� ballad 鈥淧eaches.鈥� 鈥淲onka鈥� was also missing from the list.
The 15 original score finalists included a number of familiar players, including John Williams ("Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny"), Ludwig G枚ransson (鈥淥辫辫别苍丑别颈尘别谤鈥�), Mica Levi (鈥淭he Zone of Interest鈥�) and the for 鈥淜illers of the Flower Moon.鈥� Joe Hisaishi could also be headed for his first Oscar nomination for 鈥淭he Boy and the Heron.鈥�
advanced for 鈥淭he Color Purple,鈥� but not for 鈥淥rigin,鈥� which also missed out in the song category. 鈥淧ast Lives,鈥� by Christopher Bear and Daniel Rossen, was another surprise exclusion from the score finalists.
Documentary nominees in addition to 鈥�20 Days in Mariupol鈥� include 鈥淎merican Symphony,鈥� about Batiste, 鈥淪till: A Michael J. Fox Movie,鈥� 鈥淕oing to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project,鈥� 鈥淭he Eternal Memory,鈥� 鈥淎 Still Small Voice鈥� and 鈥淔our Daughters.鈥� Some were surprised at the omission of 鈥淜okomo City,鈥� about the lives of Black trans sex workers, and 鈥淟ittle Richard: I Am Everything.鈥�
鈥淏arbie鈥� missed the cut for makeup and hairstyling, which included nominations for 鈥淏eau is Afraid,鈥� 鈥淧oor Things,鈥� 鈥淢aestro,鈥� 鈥淥ppenheimer," 鈥淜illers of the Flower Moon鈥� and 鈥淣apoleon.鈥�
Though 鈥淥辫辫别苍丑别颈尘别谤鈥� fared well in most categories, it was not among the finalists in the visual effects category. The film鈥檚 surprising omission from the list of the original 20 finalists was previously reported. The visual effects contenders are often comprised of superhero and franchise films that aren't otherwise considered big awards players 鈥� this year that includes Zack Snyder's poorly reviewed 鈥淩ebel Moon-Part One: A Child of Fire,鈥� 鈥淚ndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny鈥� and 鈥淕uardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.鈥�
Live action, animated and documentary shorts finalists were also announced. The live action category is a little starrier than usual, with both Pedro Almod贸var鈥檚 Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal western 鈥淪trange Way of Life鈥� and Wes Anderson鈥檚 鈥淭he Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,鈥� with Benedict Cumberbatch and Ben Kingsley, among the contenders.
For the most part, shortlists are determined by members in their respective categories, though the specifics vary from branch to branch: Some have committees, some have minimum viewing requirements.
Final nominations in all categories will be announced on Jan. 23. The 96th Oscars, , will be held on March 10, broadcasting live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The show will begin .
