LOS ANGELES (AP) 鈥 Steve Martin鈥檚 next role will not be the Midwestern politician the internet hoped he鈥檇 portray.
With Maya Rudolph鈥檚 wildly popular on 鈥淪aturday Night Live,鈥 fans clamored to see who the late-night comedy show would pick to play Harris鈥 new running mate, Minnesota Gov. .
With similar hairstyles and their signature glasses, many fans quickly drew comparisons between Walz and Martin, who's been a frequent 鈥淪NL鈥 guest but never a formal cast member.
The reported Wednesday that 鈥淪NL鈥 producer Lorne Michaels called Martin to offer him the role on the upcoming 50th season, premiering Sept. 28, which he declined.
鈥淚 wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淚 said, 鈥楲orne, I鈥檓 not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.鈥 I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses.鈥
Although Martin initially leaned into the fun, writing on social platform that he 鈥渏ust learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short,鈥 he also noted the impression comes with a long-term commitment of performing on the show.
鈥淚t鈥檚 ongoing,鈥 Martin told the Times. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They鈥檙e gonna find somebody really, really good. I鈥檇 be struggling.鈥
