NEW YORK (AP) 鈥� Fiction originally written in Vietnamese, Polish and French and poetry in German and Arabic are among this year's finalists for National Translation Awards.
On Wednesday, the American Literary Translators Association announced lists of six finalists in prose and poetry, with winning translators in each category receiving $4,000.
In prose, nominees include Thu芒n's novel 鈥淐hinatown,鈥� translated from Vietnamese by Nguy峄卬 An L媒; Miko艂aj Grynberg's 鈥淚鈥檇 Like to Say Sorry, But There鈥檚 No One to Say Sorry To,鈥� translated from Polish by Sean Gasper Bye; and Monique Ilboudo's 鈥淪o Distant from My Life,鈥� translated from French by Yarri Kamara. The other prose finalists are L谩szl贸 Krasznahorkai's 鈥淪padework for a Palace," translated from Hungarian by John Batki; B. Jeyamohan's 鈥淪tories of the True,鈥� translated from Tamil by Priyamvada Ramkumar; and Sheela Tomy's debut novel 鈥淰alli," translated from Malayalam by Jayasree Kalathil.
The late Nobel laureate Nelly Sachs' 鈥淔light and Metamorphosis,鈥� translated last year from German by Joshua Weiner with Linda B. Parshall, is a finalist for poetry; along with Phoebe Giannisi's 鈥淐icada,鈥� translated from Greek by Brian Sneeden; and Wong May's translation from the Chinese for the compilation 鈥淚n the Same Light: 200 Tang Poems for Our Century.鈥� Nominees also include Iman Mersal's 鈥淭he Threshold,鈥� translated from Arabic by Robyn Creswell; Venus Khoury-Ghata's 鈥淭he Water People,鈥� translated from French by Marilyn Hacker; and Ananda Devi's 鈥淲hen the Night Agrees to Speak to Me,鈥� translated from French by Kazim Ali.
Winners will be announced Nov. 11.
