LOS ANGELES 鈥 鈥淎vengers: Infinity War鈥 is still ruling the box office in its third weekend in theatres, easily beating out the mom-themed fare.
The Walt Disney Studios on Sunday estimates that 鈥淚nfinity War鈥 has added $61.8 million from North American theatres bringing its total domestic earnings to $547.8 million. Globally the film has now grossed over $1.6 billion鈥 $200 million of which was from its massive opening in China this weekend. It鈥檚 now the fifth highest grossing film of all time worldwide.
The superhero blockbuster overpowered newcomers like the Melissa McCarthy comedy 鈥淟ife of the Party鈥 and the Gabrielle Union thriller 鈥淏reaking In,鈥 both of which were strategically timed to debut on Mother鈥檚 Day weekend. Both films drew overwhelmingly female audiences, too.
In a distant second, 鈥淟ife of the Party鈥 earned an estimated $18.5 million, which is a few million short of some of McCarthy鈥檚 other comedy collaborations with husband Ben Falcone like 鈥淭ammy鈥 and 鈥淭he Boss.鈥 It
also got similarly mixed reviews from critics. The Warner Bros. release stars McCarthy as a woman who decides to go back to college with her daughter.
The studio is 鈥渢hrilled鈥 with the results.
鈥淚t鈥檚 escapist movie palace fare,鈥 said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.鈥 president of domestic distribution.
The modestly budgeted 鈥淏reaking In鈥 took third place with $16.5 million, over-performing most industry expectations despite lacklustre reviews. The film stars Union as a mom who has to fight to save her kids from a group of home invaders.
鈥淚t鈥檚 an edge-of-the-seat thriller that you may not always associate with Mother鈥檚 Day, but it worked extraordinarily well,鈥 said Jim Orr, Universal鈥檚 president of domestic theatrical distribution.
The Universal Pictures release is just the latest in a long string of successful collaborations with producer Will Packer, who also produced 鈥淕irl鈥檚 Trip鈥 and the 鈥淩ide Along鈥 films.
鈥淲e have a great partner in Will Packer and 鈥橞reaking In鈥 is another example of his very talented approach and our mutual success,鈥 Orr said.
Also benefiting from the Mother鈥檚 Day timing was 鈥淥verboard,鈥 which earned $10.1 million to take fourth place, down only 31 per cent from its debut last weekend. And rounding out the top five was 鈥淎 Quiet Place鈥 with $6.4 million. The John Krasinski-directed thriller has now earned $169.6 million domestically.
鈥淭his is a typical Mother鈥檚 Day weekend with a big blockbuster in the mix and some counter programming thrown in for good measure as we await the arrival of 鈥橠eadpool 2鈥 next week,鈥 said comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
Because of the massive success of 鈥淚nfinity War,鈥 the box office is up 4.9 per cent for the year, and a slew of blockbusters coming up are hoping to continue the success, including 鈥淒eadpool 2鈥 and 鈥淪olo: A Star Wars Story鈥 just one week later.
