Broken Rhythms to premiere new show Friday on Facebook

Victoria鈥檚 Broken Rhythms dance company will turn to Facebook for its latest production, Into the WIRE.

Rehearsals of the piece by choreographer and artistic director Dyana Sonik-Henderson were underway when the COVID-19 outbreak resulted in venue closures across the city. The show was created eight months ago and was scheduled to run for six shows in April. Those were postponed until May, before being canceled outright. The full show, which has been pre-taped, will now premiere Friday at 8 p.m. on the Broken Rhythms Facebook page.

The original production, which Sonik-Henderson describes as 鈥減ost-apocalyptic,鈥 was written to explore themes of survival, social isolation, and environmental deterioration. Sonik-Henderson said she did not have to chance much about Into the WIRE for it to be seen as a meditation on the world as it stands today. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very surreal,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he coincidence is scary.鈥

Sonik-Henderson collaborated on the piece with Dan Godlovich (music), Emma Dickerson (lighting design), and Matthew Graham (film production).
