What: Hedley, Sean Hook, Neon Dreams
Where: Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, 1925 Blanshard St.
When: Feb. 6, 7 p.m.

Why: A three-pronged showcase for the best in Can-pop has Vancouver stars Hedley at the top of the bill, and for good reason (the band led by Jacob Hoggard didn’t earn 31 Juno Award nominations by accident). What: The Alan Smithee Awards
Where: Victoria Event Centre, 1415 Broad St.
When: Feb. 1, 7 p.m.
Tickets: $15 at
Why: Victoria filmmaker Bryan Skinner is using an ignominious awards show championing/critiquing the worst in local film as a promotional tool for his in-progress mockumentary Open for Submissions. What better way to raise awareness of a mockumentary than with an awards show named after the moniker directors use when they want their names removed from a really bad film. The five- to nine- minute shorts are all real, and the filmmakers are vying for cash prizes in categories such as Best Worst Film, Most Pretentious and Most Interesting Performance Choices.
