VICTORIA FOLK NIGHT
Where: Fort Tectoria, 777 Fort St., Victoria
When: Friday, Jan. 10, 7 p.m.
Tickets: $22.63 from
Why: Oliver Swain’s Big Machine headlines Victoria Folk Night, the monthly regional music showcase that puts a premium on lyric-based performers. The coffeehouse-style series has relocated to Fort Tectoria for the first event of its 2025 season, and it’s a good one. Victoria’s Pony Gold and Vancouver’s Semi Athletic round out the line-up, which will get the year started on the proper roots music foot.
THERE IS ROOM

Why: Chamber duo There is Room will make its local debut tonight at the University of Victoria’s Emerging Alumni Series. UVic school of music grads Lindsey Herle (violin) and Elizabeth Clarke (piano) are performing their program, Encounters, which is billed as a mix of classical favourites and hidden gems, along with music by Amanda Röntgen-Maier, Erich Korngold, Gra偶yna Bacewicz, Beethoven and Calgary composer Michalis Andronikou. BACH IN THE PUB
Where: Hermann’s Jazz Club, 753 View St., Victoria
When: Wednesday, Jan. 15, 7 p.m.
Tickets: $30 from
Why: Victoria Baroque’s Bach in the Pub series welcomes Halifax’s David Greenberg to town next week for what should be an intriguing appearance. The Canadian-American soloist, chamber musician, folk fiddler and occasional Les Voix Humanes collaborator has a varied skillset, and his adaptability makes him an ideal guest for the Hermann’s Jazz Club date, where he will blend Scottish baroque-folk music with Bach for solo violin.
