Why: Ballet Victoria鈥檚 Paul Destrooper is mixing the iconic book by author Mary Shelley with composer Adolphe Adam鈥檚 Giselle 鈥� the seminal 19th Century romantic ballet 鈥� for what should be a spectacular pre-Halloween treat. Complementing the original choreography by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot will be a score featuring Verdi and Shostakovich, among others, giving Destrooper鈥檚 radical invention a mad-scientist twist.

Why: The singer-songwriter born Jane Irish Theres Monica Bernadette Mythen has been building a big buzz on the folk music scene in sa国际传媒, from East Coast Music Award wins to plum festival spots. The P.E.I.-based performer from Ireland has already sold out her Friday, Oct. 26 show at First Church of Christ Scientist, so producers have booked a second show at the Upstairs Lounge at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre. Don鈥檛 wait on this, rumour has it a second sell out is in the cards.
INDIE POP
What: SYML with Jenn Champion
Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.
When: Friday, Oct. 26, 7 p.m.
Tickets: $29.50 at Lyle鈥檚 Place and
Why: SYML鈥檚 Brian Fennell captured lightning in a bottle with 2016鈥檚 Where鈥檚 My Love, the breakthrough single from this Washington state indie-pop artist. SYML (which means 鈥渟imple鈥� in Welsh) has been somewhat of a slow burn on the charts 鈥� Where鈥檚 My Love took nearly two years to break 鈥� but his talent is readily apparent. This early show could be a sleeper, but in a good way.
