Why: Students from kindergarten to Grade 12 will be in the spotlight several times over the next week for The Greatest Show, the annual spring showcase by the Sooke School District’s Program for Academic and Creative Enrichment. More than 350 musical theatre students from the area are participating in small-scale productions of Broadway and movie musicals, including songs from Hamilton, Something Rotten, Seussical, Matilda, La La Land, Rock of Ages and Trolls, among others. Disney star Calum Worthy, an alumnus of the program, will emcee the shows, which also feature appearances from circus performer Sarah Scheunhage and standup comedian Shawn O’Hara. Evening and afternoon performances are on tap through April 28.

Why: With a unique brand of fiddle music and a zestful performance style, Cortes Island family band the Merry McKentys are must-see act in concert. The seven-piece group (which comprises five brothers, one sister and their dad) fuses traditional Canadian folk music with upbeat Irish fiddle tunes, resulting in a mix that should put this Victoria Folk Music Society presentation at the top of your to-do list this weekend. What: Vancouver Island Symphony 10th Anniversary Concert

Why: Pierre Simard, artistic director of the Vancouver Island Symphony, will step on stage as conductor Saturday to celebrate the first decade of success for this beloved orchestra. Simard will be joined for the company’s season finale by several guest artists, including flautist Sara Hahn, soprano Joslin Romphf-Dennis, mezzo-soprano Elise DesChamps, tenor Adam Dyjach and bass-baritone Brian Banion.
