Why: Canadian astronaut and former foreign affairs minister Marc Garneau will read from his memoir during an event at Bolen Books on Sunday. The event — moderated by CBC’s science commentator, Quirks and Quarks host Bob McDonald — will give sa国际传媒’s first man in space the opportunity to speak on both space travel and politics, topics which are explored in his recently-released book, A Most Extraordinary Ride: Space, Politics, and the Pursuit of a Canadian Dream. The talk is free to attend and open to all ages, but Garneau’s appearance is expected to reach capacity. Seating is offered on a first come first served basis so it’s best to arrive well in advance. Why: A new musical from Mayne Island Little Theatre runs for six shows, including two matinees, over the course of nine days on the picturesque Gulf Island, which presents interesting day trip opportunities for Victoria-based Carr fans. The collaboration between musician Gord Clements and director Brian Crumblehulme is based on the life and works of Carr, and uses her words to tell the story. Emily: Artist, Poet, Singer has been in the works for some time, and with the involvement of two decorated creators (in addition to a cast and crew of 40), it should be a don’t-miss affair.

ANNA AKANA — IT GETS DARKER

Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.
When: Friday, Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7)
Tickets: $46.31

Why: Comedian, musician, and actress Anna Akana is opening the book on her personal life and dovetailing that with a range of other topics in her show, It Gets Darker. Serious tones (suicide, celebrity stalking) and some shocking experiences in front of and behind the camera are offset by her sunny personality and the frank way she reveals her outlook on life, which has made her comedy vignettes big hits on YouTube. The 35 year-old Californian has been winning raves for her show, which was introduced this year via Fringe Festivals across the world. Her Victoria debut offers seating and the opportunity for VIP and meet-and-greet packages.
