Moon Over Buffalo runs May 11 through May 28 at Langham Court Theatre. TERRY STITT

MOON OVER BUFFALO

Where: Langham Court Theatre, 805 Langham Ct.
When: Thursday, May 11, through Sunday, May 28
Tickets: $19-$26 from or 250-384-2142

Why: Words used on promotional materials for Langham Court Theatre’s upcoming production of Moon Over Buffalo (shenanigans, screwball, madcap) suggest a throwback of the farcical variety. That’s rarely a bad thing. Playwright Ken Ludwig abides by the rules of the genre in his 1995 Broadway hit, which starred (at various points) Carol Burnett, Lynn Redgrave and Robert Goulet — casting that says something about the quality of the writing therein. Absurdity takes centre stage here, which will have audiences over the moon about Moon Over Buffalo.

RELICS

Where: Hermann’s Jazz Club, 753 View St.
When: Thursday, May 11, and Friday, May 12, 7 p.m.
Tickets: $20 from

Why: Bands who pay tribute to Pink Floyd generally focus on peak Pink, circa Wish You Were Here and The Wall. Victoria’s Relics draw heavily on early albums by the British band, from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Atom Heart Mother to Ummagumma and Meddle. With special guest Paul Wainwright on saxophone occupying the role of Dick Parry — the legendary reedman who blows on Money and Us and Them — you can expect to hear a song or two from Dark Side of the Moon during performances Thursday and Friday at Hermann’s Jazz Club and Saturday at the Duncan Showroom. That adds to the considerable appeal of seeing top local players such Wes Carroll (bass), Matt Pease (drums), Charlie Fox (keyboards), and Tom Bowler (guitar) lay into some extended jams.

STORIES WORTH TELLING

Where: Dave Dunnett Theatre, 2121 Cadboro Bay Rd.
When: Sunday, May 14, 2:30 p.m.
Tickets: $20 from

Why: An afternoon performance by the inter-generational Voices in Motion choir set for Mother’s Day will see the première of Hornby Night by choir member Margot Johnston, along with a choral presentation by Oak Bay High School’s Chamber Choir. Amy Van Wensem, music director of the choir for adults with memory loss, their caregivers, friends and students, and pianist Jeff Poynter will guide the performance of Johnston’s poem set to music, which was inspired by a starry night on Hornby Island. What a way to bring the choir’s season to a close.
