MUSIC
What: Music by the Sea
Where:
When: Sunday Nov. 29, 7:30pm
Tickets: By donation
Why: Some of the top performers in Victoria are joining together for a telethon-style livestream put on by Christopher Donison and his Music by the Sea team. Music By the Sea, the popular Bamfield festival, would have made its Victoria debut this summer, but COVID-19 necessitated the switch to a livestream model. Jazz favourite Louise Rose and the Lafayette String Quartet will perform Sunday from the Victoria International Marina, with money raised from viewers split evenly between the Victoria Hospitals Foundation and various initiatives for Vancouver Island artists produced by Music by the Sea.
ART
What: Grizzly Bears: Teachers of the Land
Where: Bateman Foundation Gallery of Nature, 300-470 Belleville St.
When: Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., until Jan. 23
Tickets: By donation
Why: More than 20 photographers, painters, carvers, and sculptors contributed to Grizzly Bears: Teachers of the Land, a new exhibit at the Bateman Foundation Gallery of Nature. A co-production with the Grizzly Bear Foundation, the exhibit is highly educational and suitable for families, as it uses several elements to tell the story of these iconic bears. Grizzly Bears: Teachers of the Land will be shown alongside the gallery’s new permanent exhibit, The World of Robert Bateman, until Jan. 23.
MUSIC
What: Garden City Grooves featuring Kutapira, Jonnie 5 Brass Band, Kia Kadiri, The Soul Motivators and more
Where:
When: Saturday Nov. 28 (4:20-9 p.m.) and Sunday Nov. 29 (5-8:30 p.m.)
Tickets: Free
Why: The seventh edition of this groove-friendly festival — which has everything from soul and funk to Afro-Cuban music on tap — won’t have a live audience this year, which is unfortunate, since Garden City Grooves is nothing if not an energetic dance-party. But the switch to livestreaming will offer some recompense, as several acts performing live from Studio Robazzo on Douglas Street are on tap Saturday and Sunday. A wide range of programming — including a remote set by The Soul Motivators from Toronto — offers plenty of reasons to tune in.
