Join in walking with, or carrying, a three-metre tall wooden cross through downtown Victoria at The Way of the Cross procession on Good Friday.
The procession, which honours the Christian belief that Jesus Christ carried a wooden cross through the streets of Jerusalem before he was crucified, is coordinated by parishioners of Christ Church Cathedral and part of events held around Holy Week and Easter.
People will have an opportunity to take turns carrying the large cross, which can be a symbol of everyone’s cross to bear. Participation is available to any who wish to take on the burden. The event is a contemplative opportunity for participants, who can join or leave the procession as they wish.
The event is free to join. It starts at 9 a.m. from Pioneer Square (at Quadra and Rockland streets). The route proceeds along Quadra to Burdett and Humboldt, then north along Government to Johnson, east on Johnson to Quadra and then returning to Pioneer Square.
Changes in carriers of the cross occur by request, on an ongoing basis during the procession. Short readings of five passages from scripture are made at stops en route.
The procession returns to Pioneer Square at approximately 10:15 a.m. — in time for participants to head to church services held at the Cathedral and elsewhere.
