Take your plant-loving grandparents for a stroll through a heritage West Coast garden for free as the Abkhazi Garden hosts its annual open house on Sunday.
Celebrate Grandparents Day with free admission to the one acre garden, a legacy left behind by Prince and Princess Abkhazi, who planted the first plants on the property in 1946. Today, mature Garry oaks, Japanese maples and rhododendrons flow around glaciated rocky slopes amid carpets of heather, irises and day lilies.
The open house coincides with a fundraising fall plant sale, with proceeds to go toward the maintenance of the garden. Unique plants found at the sale will include the Bella Bella (Italian for very beautiful) Magnolia tree and specials on Katura trees (a four-season shade tree).Enter contests at the open house for chances to win prizes such as High Tea for Two at the Teahouse, Abkhazi Garden Children’s Activity Books and more.
Admission is free to the open house, which runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at Abkhazi Garden, 1964 Fairfield Rd.
