Nanaimo鈥檚 David Gogo, Salt Spring Island鈥檚 Raffi and Victoria鈥檚 Steve Bays lead a small contingent of artists with ties to the Vancouver Island area who received Western Canadian Music Award nominations.
Gogo, who is up for blues artist of the year, joins nominees from all four western provinces and three northern territories this year. Raffi will compete for children鈥檚 artist of the year. Bays, the former Hot Hot Heat frontman now based in Vancouver, will vie for producer of the year and audio engineering honours.
Victoria鈥檚 Carmanah and Victoria-bred Pharis & Jason Romero are in the roots duo/group of the year category. Pharis & Jason Romero also scored a nomination for songwriters of the year.
The music industry gala is set for Whitehorse, Yukon, Oct. 2-6.
