Voters took a liking to Cedar the wolf, Spiro the eagle, and Sky the sea otter — stars of Netflix’s Island of the Sea Wolves — resulting in seven Daytime Emmy Award nominations for the Vancouver Island-shot series.

The three-part documentary, which was shot last year primarily in Victoria and Port Renfrew, landed more nods than Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, and The Talk combined. Island of the Sea Wolves is nominated for Travel, Adventure and Nature Program; Writing Team for a Daytime Non-Fiction Program; Directing Team for a Single Camera Daytime Non-Fiction Program; Outstanding Music Direction and Composition; Cinematography; Single Camera Editing; and Sound Mixing and Sound Editing.

The awards will be presented June 16 on CBS.

The series, with narration from Smartless co-host Will Arnett, takes an intimate look at the lives of several species of animals on Vancouver Island, including wolves, eagles, and sea otters. “Vancouver Island has a lot of habitats and interesting characters and unique stuff going on,” filmmaker Jeff Turner, who co-directed the series with daughter Chelsea Turner, told the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ last year.

“When you really get into it and peel back the layers a little bit, and look really closely at what’s there, you see things you don’t necessarily always expect.”

Island of the Sea Wolves required 600 filming days over nine months across Vancouver Island, Turner said. It is currently available for streaming on Netlfix.
