Take a chip off your old tree

The sound of Christmas carols is being replaced this week with the roar of tree chippers, turning a forest of Christmas trees into mulch.
The sound of Christmas carols is being replaced this week with the roar of tree chippers, turning a forest of Christmas trees into mulch.

Several non-profit organizations are once again offering to dispose of trees in an environmentally friendly manner — and raise money in the process. Some even offer to pick up trees from homes.

Here are some of the organizations and their drop-off points:

Who: sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Lions Society annual Chip-In for the Kids

Where: Tillicum Shopping Centre, Broadmead Village Shopping Centre, Safeway (Fort and Foul Bay), Westshore Town Centre, University Heights Shopping Centre and Sooke Home Hardware. Cowichan Valley residents can drop off Christmas trees at the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Forest Discovery Centre, 2892 Drinkwater Rd., in Duncan.

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Cost: By donation

Who: 14th Juan de Fuca Scouts

Where: Luxton Fairgrounds, 1040 Marwood Ave.

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Cost: $5 drop-off or $10 pick-up

Where: Wain Road Fire Hall, 986 Wain Rd., and McTavish Fire Hall, 1620 McTavish Rd.

When: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday

Note: Wain Road will also host an open house with hot dogs, coffee, hot chocolate and fire-truck rides.

The McTavish location will also accept bottles.
