An Alberta company that specializes in environmental waste management has been given a warning by the BC Environmental Assessment Office over it’s the management of landfill for hazardous materials from oil and gas activities near Fort Nelson.
Secure Energy Services (TSX:SES) was issued a warning letter over its Northern Rockies Secure Landfill project. That facility was previously owned and operated by Tervita Corporation, which Secure Energy recently acquired through a merger.
Following an inspection in June, the EAO found four areas of non-compliance, including failing to submit annual reports to the EAO, not treating potential contact water as leachate, failing to install proper fencing to keep out wildlife, and failing to give Doig River First Nations a tour of the site.
“The EAO has issued two warnings to Tervita and an immediate order to install wildlife fencing,” the EAO notes.
The landfill is located about 20 kilometres south of Fort Nelson. It is used for long-term disposal of up to 2.2 million cubic metres of contaminated soil from upstream oil and gas activities, according to the BC EAO.
