Lisa Marie Barron, the NDP candidate in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding, was leading when polls closed on election night, and when all the special ballots had been counted four days later she was still on top and will represent the riding in Ottawa.
Late Friday, following the final count of the riding鈥檚 special ballots 鈥 mainly mail-in ballots 鈥 Barron held 29 per cent of the vote with 19,896 votes, followed by Conservative Tamara Kronis at 18,615 and incumbent Paul Manly of the Green Party with 17,640.
鈥淭he hard work begins now, and I look forward to joining Jagmeet Singh and my NDP colleagues to fight for people and help deliver solutions,鈥 said Barron. 鈥淔rom the housing crisis to the climate crisis to the opioid crisis, people on the doorstep told me they want a strong voice for urgent action and I鈥檓 ready for the challenges ahead.鈥
Barron, who hopes to make an impact on the issues of housing and health care, said she was grateful for the community support and the sharing of ideas and opinions of the other candidates.
鈥淲e can have more affordable housing, more affordable and available health care, and more urgent climate action,鈥 said Barron. 鈥淛agmeet Singh and the NDP will continue to push Justin Trudeau for the solutions Canadians are depending on us to deliver.鈥
