Boaters exchange takes over marine thrift store
The Maritime Museum of sa国际传媒 has teamed up with Tradewinds Boaters Exchange to run a thrift store called All Things Marine at Canoe Cove Marina in North Saanich.
The museum had run the store on its own for the past four years.
It sells donated used marine goods to both reduce unnecessary waste going to the landfill and to raise money for the museum. In the new partnership, Tradewinds will assume day-to-day operations of the store. The five-year agreement will see the museum receive 10 per cent of all sales.

The store is currently undergoing major renovations and will have a distinctly nautical theme. 鈥淲e are bringing in new inventory and will be displaying products in a unique way,鈥 said Steve Ohman, owner and operator of Tradewinds.
The updated store will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays. The store is through the boatyard to the left at Canoe聽Cove Marina, 2300 Canoe Cove Rd.
City seeking nine for panel on International Decade for People of African Descent
The City of Victoria is 颅recruiting up to nine people of African descent to be part of its new advisory committee to 颅recognize the International Decade for People of African Descent 颅2015-2024.
The new committee will engage with the community in developing a three-year action plan to implement the United Nations鈥 proclamation on 颅promoting respect, protection and fulfilment of human rights and fundamental freedoms for people of African descent.
鈥淚鈥檓 so very pleased we are establishing this new 颅advisory committee as it demonstrates the city鈥檚 commitment to addressing anti-Blackness racism and creating a more inclusive city for all, as well as celebrating and 颅recognizing the contributions of people of 颅African descent in our 颅community,鈥 said Victoria Coun. The committee will 颅comprise three elder members, three youth members between the ages of 18 and 29 and three members that represent 颅Black-led organizations and businesses.
Applicants should have knowledge or previous 颅experience in racial equity and/or anti-discrimination work or a strong commitment to learn and contribute to this work.
Advisory committee 颅members will receive an 颅honorarium and serve a three-year term to the end of 2024.

Public library launches summer reading club
Just in time for summer, the Greater Victoria Public Library is offering a sa国际传媒 Summer Reading Club with prizes to encourage children to read 20 minutes every day.
Children ages 12 and under (or their parents or caregivers) can visit any branch to collect a 2021 sa国际传媒 Summer Reading Club package with its 鈥淐rack the Case鈥 theme.
鈥淭he sa国际传媒 Summer Reading Club encourages children to read and maintain or improve their reading skills during the summer months,鈥 said Maureen Sawa, CEO of the Greater Victoria Public Library. 鈥淚t helps kids develop or continue the habit of regular reading and explore the joy of reading for pleasure. It also reminds families of the fantastic resources available to them through their local library.鈥
Participants read every day for at least 20 minutes and record their progress in their reading record. After one full week of reading, participants choose a sticker and match it to their record.
The goal is to complete seven weeks. Starting Aug. 19, participants can visit any GVPL library branch and collect their final prize of a book and a medal.
There will also be related online programs offered by the library, as well as Take and Make activity bags that will be distributed in person as part of the program.
Read and Write Reviews (formerly called All That and a Bag of Chips), a program designed for tweens and teens, will launch in early July. The program encourages participants to engage with books and reading through an online contest.

Fundraising market supports needy in Rwanda
Friends of Gashora are hosting a fundraising market featuring unique African crafts in the Fort Commons courtyard on July 17.
The local charity supports the vulnerable and underprivileged in Gashora, Rwanda.
The market will feature hand-crafted baskets and bowls, wall decor, Ubuntu bracelets, silver jewellery, paintings and crafts by Grandmothers for Africa.
Proceeds from the sale will go towards drilling a well and a pump system for the village. The project will be shared with American Friends of Journey House Actions Rwanda.

Golf for Kids event goes virtual with 50/50 draw
The Golf for Kids Charity Classic, usually a one-day golf event raising funds for children鈥檚 charities on Vancouver Island, has gone virtual with a 50/50 For the Kids draw.
For the first time, they are trying out a 50/50 draw that allows anyone in sa国际传媒 to buy a ticket.
They are hoping to raise $750,000 this year with the draw and other fundraising efforts.

Brain Tumour Walk supports research for cure
Create or join a team from Victoria at the Brain Tumour Foundation of sa国际传媒鈥檚 annual Brain Tumour Walk.
This is the second year the walk is being done virtually due to the pandemic.
The foundation says 27 people are diagnosed with a brain tumour every day 鈥 many of them children.
鈥淭he funds raised allow us to support research into the cause and cure for brain tumours,鈥 said Susan Marshall, CEO of Brain Tumour Foundation of sa国际传媒. 鈥淥ur support programs ensure nobody affected by a brain tumour has to walk alone.鈥
This year鈥檚 goal is $1.45 million.

Bottle drive aids Esquimalt鈥檚 military families
Dodd鈥檚 Furniture and Mattress is hosting a No Sort Bottle Drive in support of Esquimalt鈥檚 Military and Family Resource Centre, July 11.
The event also celebrates Dodd鈥檚 Cares, which gives a 10 per cent discount to members of the military and first responder community.
The event runs between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday, July 11 at 715 Finlayson St.
Welcoming Strategy feedback invited by Victoria
The City of Victoria is looking for feedback on its Welcoming City Strategy, now until July 11.
The city has set up an online survey to ensure the strategy includes steps to create a welcoming and inclusive city where newcomers, immigrants and refugees are accepted, respected and feel like they belong.
鈥淥n behalf of the Welcoming City Task Force, I want to thank all the newcomers and long-time residents who shared their ideas, stories and lived experiences of belonging or not belonging, to help inform potential ideas for the Welcoming City Strategy,鈥 said Mayor Lisa Helps, co-chair of the Welcoming City Task Force. 鈥淚 encourage the community to take the opportunity to provide feedback in the online survey. 鈥
The task force will assess Victoria against an international Welcoming Standard, which helps cities become more prosperous by ensuring everyone belongs.
The draft strategy will be presented to the city council for consideration this fall.
