When Amor De Cosmos started publishing the weekly British Colonist 160 years ago, his goal was to make the community a better place — and in his mind, to do that he would have to deal with the colonial governor, James Douglas.

He was born William Alexander Smith in Nova Scotia and became a legend in British Columbia, but he made a name for himself — quite literally — when he was in California.

Amor De Cosmos launched his British Colonist in a little shop on Wharf Street on Dec. 11, 1858. He guided his creation for a few years, then passed the torch to others.

The words of Chief William have helped to remind us of the value to be found in historic copies of the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ and its predecessor newspapers, the Daily Colonist and the Victoria Daily Times.
