What: Reel-to-Reel Music + Motion Challenge

Where: Victoria Event Centre, 1415 Broad St.

When: Tonight, 7 p.m.

Tickets: $10 at the door

Info: cinevic.ca, 250-389-1590

Why: CineVic's annual collection of short films created by innovative independent filmmakers paired with local musicians working in genres such as folk, jazz, electronica, indie rock - you name it - remains one of the late summer's most anticipated cultural events. It's a reliably revealing showcase of emerging talent on both sides of the camera, and from musicians afforded a unique opportunity to have their works brought to life. This year's juried event, emceed by local funnyman Morgan Cranny, marks a first - a 3-D entry, so be prepared to don those goggles and imagine you're in the multiplex. - Michael D. Reid

ART

What: Art Incognito

Where: Vancouver Island School of Art

When: Friday, 7 to 10 p.m.

Tickets: $35

Why: In this art-school fundraiser, which bills itself as Vancouver Island's largest contemporary art auction, masterpieces are displayed without their makers' signatures. So bid on art because you like it, not because it was created by a certain celebrity. You may walk away with a Sara Robichaud or Ted Harrison anyway - they're among the established artists who have donated pieces to be mixed with emerging artists' work. Plus, your ticket includes a cocktail reception (hello wine, beer and martini bar), sweet and savoury edibles and DJ tunes. - Amy Smart

CLASSICAL MUSIC
