Aeriosa isn't the only draw at this year's Romp! in the Square, the 15th annual celebration of independent dance presented by Suddenly Dance Theatre.

The five-day free event will also feature performances by Ballet Victoria, Constance Cooke, Monique Salez, Kim Breiland and Present/Tense.

Each night's performances - which begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and 8 p.m.

Thursday to Saturday - wrap with a screening of locally produced dance flick Rush of Water/Rush of Air.

The title takes inspiration from the Lekwungen people's name for this land, camosack, which means "rush of water."

"The inspiration kind of came out of that and became a piece about public gathering - really, the idea of giving and receiving in a public place," said artistic director David Ferguson, who created the film with dancers Jung-ah Chung and Robb Beresford. They designed the 25-minute installation for four screens that will fill archways in Centennial Square.

Though Ferguson launched Romp! in the Square last year as a preview of what was to come at the Romp! Festival of Independence Dance in the fall, Ferguson said it's now the main event.

"We just felt like we wanted to do things differently going into the future, in part so we can focus on our creative work like this film installation," said Ferguson, who also took on a new job as general manager of Kaleidoscope Theatre, since last year's festival.

He said moving out into public spaces has both advantages and disadvantages. "We don't have the same opportunity to produce some things that you'd do in the theatre," he said. "At the same time, we're catching an audience that might never have gotten there to see it."
