Honorary degrees bestowed upon cross-section of society

The University of Victoria's list of honorary-degree holders is a virtual who'swho of national and international achievers, beginning with the first convocation ceremony at the then-new campus in May 1964.

The initial honorary degree was bestowed on Jeffree Aikin Cunningham, founder of UVic's biology department and namesake of the building that houses the department today. Hundreds have followed, from a mountain climber to sports stars to royalty.

The mountaineer was none other than Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to conquer Mount Everest. He received his honorary degree in 1969, as much for his post-climb humanitarian work in Nepal as for his efforts on that country's famous peak.

The convocation with Hillary was held at Centennial Stadium, then just a few years old but already known for its chilly winds. Hillary joked that it was practically as cold as Everest.

Joining Hillary in the breezy confines of the stadium to receive his own honorary degree was noted Canadian literary critic Northrop Frye. That fall, Prince Philip was similarly recognized.

Prince Edward followed in 1994, the same year that Miracle Milers Roger Banister and John Landy were honoured.

Others recognized through the years include Grand Chief Edward John (2012), basketball star Steve Nash (2009), violinist Yehudi Menuhin (1998) and John Furlong, who guided the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (2011).

The criteria for receiving an honorary degree are stringent, and according to UVic documents include "an exceptional record of distinction and achievement" in such areas as scholarship, teaching, the creative arts and public service. Selections are made by the university senate.

Regional and cultural diversity are also important considerations.

To make a nomination, send a nomination package to the Office of the University Secretary, Room A138, Administrative Services Building, care of the associate university secretary.
